Marras Chairs Report on Miner Safety

Dr. William Marras, Co-Executive Director of the Institute for Ergonomics, chaired the committee of a soon-to-be released National Academy of Sciences report on helping trapped miners.  This report comprehensively examines the many factors that affect mine safety.  More specifically, it identifies tools that would help miners trapped underground to escape.

A large part of the report focuses on features of new technology and communication and tracking devices that can be used underground following a mining accident.  It also highlights the need for mining companies to conduct escape drills frequently and extensively train miners on the use of safety equipment.

The complete report, Improving Self-Escape from Underground Coal Mines, is available from The National Academies Press.
